Throw What’s in Your Right Hand – A Reflection On The Story of Prophet Musa (عليه السلام ) and the Magicians

Assalamu alaykum, dear sister.

This week on the podcast, we sat with a powerful verse from Surah Taha (20:69):

“Cast what is in your right hand, and it will swallow up what they have made, for what they have made is no more than a magic trick. And magicians can never succeed wherever they go.”

One sentence takeaway:

When you face something that is filled with overwhelming falsehood, trust Allah’s command and act; with what He has already given you, and the truth will swallow the illusion every time.

A Quick Tip

You don’t need more tools. You need to use the one in your hand. Pick one small Islamic habit you already have (e.g., morning adhkar) and do it with full intention today. Musa only had his staff – ordinary, yet powerful when used by Allah’s command.

This Is The Du’a Prophet Musah Made

Before facing Pharaoh, Musa made this du’a: “Rabbi ishrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wahlul ‘uqdatan min lisani, yafqahu qawli.” (My Lord, expand my chest, ease my task, untie the knot from my tongue so they may understand my speech.) A sunnah du’a for confidence and clarity.

Now, Let’s Take A Moment To Understand The Verse

Surah Taha (20:69) – the word “takhfa” means to swallow/engulf. Truth doesn’t just coexist with falsehood; it consumes it. ما شاء الله

A Myth Buster

“I need to be perfect or powerful to overcome my struggles.” Truth: The magicians were experts, but Musa’s simple obedience won. Start small – 5 minutes of Quran daily.

And On Gratitude, The magicians lost their life’s work, yet they fell in prostration and believed. Gratitude that Allah guides people in the most unexpected moments.

A Reminder

“The sorcerer never succeeds, wherever he goes.” You don’t need to be a magician – you need to be a believer.

Your Challenge For Today

Identify one “snake” in your life – a fear or comparison that seems huge. Write down what’s in your “right hand” (a du’a, a skill, a supportive person). Take one small action today.

📌Point To Note:

“throw what’s in your right hand” does not means any action without preparation, or that results are guaranteed instantly.

The correct understanding:

– Not a call to reckless action without du’a and planning (Musa first made du’a – verse 20:25-28).

– Not a promise that falsehood vanishes instantly (the magicians’ snakes looked real for a moment).

– Yes, a reminder that truth, when acted upon sincerely, will ultimately prevail – even if not today. The power is from Allah, not our own strength.

Du’a of Musa (Arabic and meaning)

رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِي يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي

“My Lord, expand for me my chest, ease my task for me, and untie the knot from my tongue so they may understand my speech.” (Surah Taha 20:25-28)
